Day 308. 4th November Bible Commentary With Dr. Toyin Ojo Taken From The Book Of Mark, Matthew, Luke And John.
GOLGOTHA
MARK 1521-24, MATTHEW 2732-34, LUKE 2326-31
IT WAS ON A FRIDAY…
Jesus was been led to Golgotha (The Place Of Skull) — “the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon a man from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus” Lk 2326
After then Jesus was offered wine mixed with gall but he couldn’t have the drink for the taste. (Mtt 2734).
The crowd followed and the women and children were weeping, Jesus addressed them, so that they stop weeping for him (read this in Lk 2328-31 and his reference in Hosea 108, on their impending calamity for which they should weep).
John 1916b-17 “So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).”
MARK 1525-32, MATTHEW 2735-44, LUKE 2332-43, JOHN 1918-27
THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS - @9AM
The crucifixion of Jesus took place at 9am with this charge placed above his head JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS (Jh 1919,Lk 2338, Mk 1525,
Mtt 2737).
Two criminals were crucified with him to his left and the other to his right (Mk 1527).
He was mocked by the religious leaders and passers-by;
Mocking how he has saved others but himself, the lies told against him were used to taunt him – To save himself since he made the boast to rebuild the temple within three (3) days. Even the thieves mocked him (Mk 1531-32).
- Jesus prayed for them saying “ ‘Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing’ -
They divided his clothes casting lots” Lk 2334; and the scripture -Psalm 2219- was fulfilled – Jhn 1924
The chief priests, teachers of the law and elders continued mocking him claiming they would believe him if only he could save himself – calling him the King of Israel, and questioning his claim to be Son of God (Mtt 2741-42).
Of the two criminals, one cautioned the other speaking wisely; accepting their condemnation but exonerating Jesus —
- “…'we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong’ Then he said ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom’” Lk 2341-42
- Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Lk 2343; He gained his salvation. His attitude gave him a last-minute miracle.
MARY HIS MOTHER WAS NEAR HIM AT GOLGOTHA, with Mary the wife of
Clopas and Mary Magdalene. Jh 1925
- He entrusted her to a very dear disciple who was also present (See Jh
1926-27)
MARK 1533-41, MATTHEW 2745-46, LUKE 2344-49, JOHN 1928-37
JESUS GAVE UP THE GHOST
“At noon darkness came over the whole land until 3 in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ ” Mtt 2746, Mk 1534; Which means "my God my God why have you forsaken me?"
- Interestingly he had prayed Psalm 221, a Psalm of David. This again points us to the use of Psalms for effective prayers and soul healing.
And they thought he was calling on Elijah. He was offered wine vinegar in a sponge by a member of the public. (Mk 1536, Mtt 2748).
After this Jesus with a loud voice cried;
- “ Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Lk 2346, Mtt 2750 Praying from Psalm 315 – and he breathed his last
- The book of John accounts for this event stating that “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” Jh 1930
- “At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many Holy people who had died, were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.” Mtt 2751-53
Many believed witnessing these signs — That he was the Son of God (Mtt 2754,
Lk 2347-48)
HIS SIDES WERE PIERCED
They had to be taken down for ceremonial reasons;
"Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the sabbath, they asked
Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down." Jh 1931 it was then decided and their legs were broken. But since Jesus was dead it was agreed it wasn’t necessary to break his leg.
Jesus’ side was pierced by a soldier and BLOOD AND WATER GUSHED OUT – John 1934, and the scripture was fulfilled (see Exodus 1246, Numbers 912, Psalm
3420).
- It is an endless stream from which we access all that we need.
Jesus gave up the Ghost on a Friday, the preparation day precedes the sabbath day (Sunday in modern calendar).
WOMEN IN MINISTRY
Many women gathered witnessing all that Jesus suffered and the response of heaven to his crying birthing our salvation and renewed lives. (see Mtt 2755, Lk 2349, Mk 1540)
- Those mentioned who followed from Galilee and were devoted to Jesus, are Mary Magdalene out of whom Jesus cast out seven demons before she joined his ministry, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and Mrs Zebedee the mother of two of his disciples.
NIGHT:
Pray for the grace to finish well! And reflect on how the criminal attracted mercy to himself. Luke 2340-43
