Day 277. 4th October Bible Commentary With Dr. Toyin  Ojo Taken From The Book Of Matthew And Luke.

A LAVISH ANOINTING

God Has Come!

Crowds continue to follow Jesus as his mission progressed in today’s study; Jesus is in Capernaum, Nain, and the towns in Galilee.

MATTHEW 85-13, LUKE 71-10

JESUS IN CAPERNAUM

Faith was expressed in Capernaum by a centurion whose favourite staff was ill. And he asked Jesus for a word believing the spoken word was sufficient to heal his paralysed and dying staff - Jesus who was approaching his house was amazed at his faith, he spoke the word and his servant was healed.

“Lord I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.  But just say the word, and my servant will be healed for I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one ‘Go, and he goes; and that one, ‘Come’ and he comes. I say to my servants, ‘Do this and he does it” v.8-9.

Luke 711-17

NOW AT NAIN – Jesus raised a widow’s son from the dead. The crowds were

amazed. Praising God they said “A great prophet has appeared among us… God has come to help his

people. This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.” v.16-17.

MATTHEW 111-19, LUKE 718-35

JESUS IN THE TOWN OF GALILEE

John communicates with Jesus. From the prison he sends his disciples when he heard of the miracles, asking to know if he was the Messiah?

“Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see; the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me’.” v.5-6.

⁕Why do you think John should ask that question? Was he depressed and stressed? Was he trying to draw the attention of Jesus to his suffering in the prison? John had baptised Jesus and witnessed the heavens open and testify at his Baptism!

Jesus spoke to the crowds who followed him about John – A PROPHET they saw in the wilderness – been a forerunner – the fulfilment of prophecy written in Malachi 31 –

“I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare the way before you.” Matt 1110, Lk 727.

 ALWAYS FAULT-FINDING!

  • Jesus confronts the wayward human hearts who do not dance to their own tunes.
  • He told them John was the Elijah – they were expecting (see Matt 1114) This is true because the spirit of Elijah was in John as prophesied at his conception by the angels sent to his parents (see Lk 117).
  • Yet, John to them was a demon because he fasted, and he Jesus is a glutton, drunkard and friend of sinners!

“From the day of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence and violent people have been raiding it. I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John: yet the one who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.”  Matt 1112,14, Lk 728.

MATTHEW 1120-30

  • 20-24 – Though miracles had been performed in Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum yet they are not broken – they are unrepentant – Jesus proclaim their woes – Judgement coming – They should expect worse than will be dealt Tyre, Sidon, and Sodom.
  • v.25-30 – Jesus gives thanks to God (v.25-26), he also testifies of himself “All things have been committed unto me by my father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal himself.” v.27.
  • He calls the weary, and burdened, he offers his yoke, himself and rest.

“Come to me …. Take my yoke upon you and

learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,

and you will find rest for your souls. For my

yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (v.28-30).

LUKE 736-50

A LAVISH ANOINTING – THE ALABASTER JAR!

On invitation at the Pharisee's house, Jesus sat at the table, a sinful woman came in with an alabaster box poured it on his feet “As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.” v.38.

The Pharisee was disappointed, wondering if Jesus was a true Prophet but could not discern who she was.

Understanding his thoughts Jesus gave this analogy of :

  • A small debt Vs big debt forgiven. And asked his host - who will be more grateful, therefore, expressing more love - the Bigger debtor or the Smaller debtor? (v.41-43). Urging the man to judge – he said the person with the greater debt forgiven.
  • Then Jesus said; for her many loving acts shown him (v.44-47) her sins are forgiven (v.48).

NIGHT;

Reconciling in faith. Ponder on the miracles you have witnessed, or heard, yet you doubt God to forgive, heal, protect and bless you. (Matthew 1123).
